Matthew J. Cannon Participates in ACI’s Midwest Anti-Corruption Compliance Forum

CHICAGO – June 27, 2018Matthew J. Cannon, a shareholder in the Chicago office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, spoke at The American Conference Institute’s (ACI) 9th Annual Midwest Anti-Corruption Compliance Forum at The Blackstone Hotel in Chicago, June 26-27. Regarded as the premier anti-corruption program in the Midwest, the Forum focused on industry issues including third-party risks and global compliance benchmarking.

Cannon spoke on the panel “Gifts, Entertainment & Hospitality: What to Do Now When Local Customs Conflict with FCPA Requirements.” The panel provided a series of complex hypothetical scenarios and proposed practical solutions for minimizing the risk of noncompliance. Scenarios discussed included how far to go in adhering to local customs; determining what is a “reasonable” gift, entertainment, or hospitality item; recordkeeping do’s and don’ts; and best practices for internal controls.

Cannon has nearly two decades of criminal and civil litigation experience. He has served as the First Chair in numerous federal jury trials and has combined his courtroom skills, his experience as a federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice (DOJ), and his wide-ranging civil litigation skills into a practice that combines anti-corruption compliance work and litigation. Cannon focuses his practice on representing companies and individuals subject to government investigations and litigation. He also assists companies with implementing and assessing anti-corruption compliance programs throughout the world, including programs focused on the FCPA and the U.K. Bribery Act.
