TALLAHASSEE – Oct. 28, 2022 – City & State Florida named four members of the Tallahassee office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A. to its inaugural Health Care Power 100 list, which recognizes the most influential people in the Florida health care industry.
Greenberg Traurig’s David C. Ashburn, Michael J. Cherniga, Hayden R. Dempsey, and Liz Dudek appear together on the list, praised for their “notable level of expertise in health care policy work,” as well as their collective experience in and out of government.
The Power 100 list comprises state officials, hospital and insurance CEOs, leaders of trade associations and professional organizations, medical school presidents, lobbyists, entrepreneurs, and others “who are shaping the medical systems that serve Florida,” according to the publication.
Ashburn, Cherniga, and Dempsey are Tallahassee-based shareholders at Greenberg Traurig, while Dudek is the firm’s director of health care affairs.
- Ashburn, managing shareholder of the Tallahassee office, provides state and federal regulatory counsel and administrative litigation representation to hospitals, assisted living facilities, continuing care retirement communities, surgery centers, nursing homes, and insurers, among others in the health care, managed care, financial services, and insurance industries. His clients include buyers and sellers of regulated businesses and the lenders and private equity groups that finance those transactions.
- Cherniga, a member of the firm’s Health Care & FDA Practice, represents clients in health care regulatory and transactional matters. He has assisted clients with matters involving professional and organizational licensure and certification, patient privacy laws, anti-kickback laws, physician self-referral prohibitions, and Medicare, Medicaid, and other governmental payor requirements. He also has assisted clients with acquisitions and joint ventures, contracting for goods and services, and provider/payor relationships.
- Dempsey, who chairs Greenberg Traurig’s Florida Government Law & Policy Practice, handles a wide range of health care regulatory matters at the state and federal levels. He formerly held key roles in the administrations of Governors Rick Scott, Jeb Bush, Bob Martinez, and Lawton Chiles and recently was appointed to the Judicial Nominating Commission for Florida’s First District Court of Appeal. City & State Florida describes him as a “go-to expert” on Medicaid and health care regulatory issues, including matters before the state Legislature and the Office of Insurance Regulation.
- Dudek, a former secretary of the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), helps clients navigate the health care system, interact with agencies, and better understand legislative affairs and their accompanying issues. She brings over 40 years of state government experience to Greenberg Traurig, including overseeing Florida’s Medicaid program as AHCA secretary from 2011 to 2016.
