Greenberg Traurig Bolsters its Florida IP Roster as Tech Companies Relocate and Expand to the State

MIAMI – April 20, 2022 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A. is bolstering its intellectual property and technology capabilities in Florida to meet client demand as the state continues to develop as a hub for tech companies and investment.

The firm recently added two new IP attorneys in its West Palm Beach office to further enhance the services it offers to tech clients and other businesses looking to protect their brand and innovations. Michael K. Dixon and Roy P. Zachariah joined Greenberg Traurig as shareholders in March. Both attorneys focus their IP practices on assisting local, national, and global clients in obtaining and defending patents and avoiding potential patent infringement. Their clients work in a range of fields, including computer science, higher education, electrical engineering, mechanical systems, medical devices, and telecommunications.

With more than 225 attorneys and patent agents worldwide, Greenberg Traurig’s Intellectual Property and Technology Practice handles all aspects of IP law, from counseling clients with large IP portfolios to preparing and prosecuting patent, copyright, and trademark applications to litigating disputes. Greenberg Traurig has been named a “National Tier 1” law firm for IP Litigation, Patent Law and Litigation, Copyright Law, Trademark Law, and Information Technology Law by the U.S. News -- Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” report every year since 2014, including 2022.

“The robust performance and growth of Greenberg Traurig’s IP practice is core to our mission of being at the forefront of both the local and global technology industry,” said Miami Co-Managing Shareholder Jaret L. Davis, who has played a key role in building Miami’s technology ecosystem. He also serves as co-founder and general counsel of eMerge Americas, Miami’s premier technology event. “With more tech companies relocating and expanding to Florida and a surge in domestic and cross-border investment in these companies, we are seeing an increased need for IP attorneys who have strong tech knowledge and experience. Leveraging our global platform, Greenberg Traurig is uniquely well-positioned to serve the growing number of companies that are part of the state’s thriving innovation ecosystem.”

In addition to Dixon and Zachariah, the IP practice team in Florida includes Miami office Shareholders Alan N. Sutin and Manuel R. Valcarcel IV; Orlando office Shareholders Joshua R. Brown and Gregory W. Herbert, and Of Counsel Stephen G. Anderson; and Tallahassee office Shareholder Lorence Jon Bielby.

Greenberg Traurig also is expanding its IP practice nationally. The recent shareholder and of counsel additions in 2022 are Boston office Shareholder Andrew (A.J.) Tibbets; Salt Lake City office Shareholder Tiffany D.W. Shimada; and Washington, D.C. office Shareholder Jay Guiliano; and Of Counsel Philip J. Hoffmann, a former administrative patent judge at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This growth marks a continued trend that saw the arrival of nine lateral shareholders and of counsels in 2021.

“Our IP attorneys have deep-rooted engineering and science backgrounds, which allows us to better understand our clients’ needs, whether they be startups or established companies. We can provide effective and forward-thinking solutions that best serve their business interests,” said Scott J. Bornstein and Mark. R. Galis, who serve as co-chairs of the firm’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. “We continue looking for strategic opportunities to grow our IP and technology capabilities to meet the needs of companies that are growing throughout the U.S. and beyond.”
