Dale Wainwright, a former Texas Supreme Court justice, has left his job as managing partner at the Austin office of Bracewell LLP to take over the statewide appellate group for a rival law firm.
Wainwright, who was the first African-American elected to the Texas Supreme Court, started his new job Feb. 20 as chairman of the Texas appellate group in the Austin office of Greenberg Traurig LLP. Wainwright joined the state's highest court in 2002 and remained on the bench — where he authored more than 125 opinions — until returning to private practice in 2012 at Bracewell.
He said his decision to join Greenberg sprang from a casual conversation.
"I was catching up over lunch [last year] with some good friends at Greenberg when the possibility was mentioned to come over there to expand their appellate practice," Wainwright said. "I was happy where I was but as I was thinking about it, it started to sink in. Getting a chance to expand an appellate practice doesn't come along every day. I'm excited and flattered to be at Greenberg Traurig and looking forward to working with my colleagues to make that happen."
