SAN FRANCISCO – Dec. 6, 2019 –Andrew Schwaab and David Bloch of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP spoke at the 6th Annual European Patent Forum USA 2019, Dec. 4, in San Mateo.
Hosted by Managing Intellectual Property, the conference focused on the rapid advances in technology and how they may pose critical challenges for IP owners’ protection and enforcement. Speakers included leading European lawyers and patent professionals. Topics included the recent trade war, China IP laws, and the volatile political landscape in Europe.
Schwaab led a roundtable session titled “Enforcement in China: Staying Ahead and Avoiding Obstacles.” He discussed enforcement options available through the courts, through administrative action, and through CNIPA, the Chinese Patent & Trademark Office of China. Other topics included strategies available for different scenarios/rights and the recent strengthening of IP protection in China, such as the changes to Trademark Law effective November 1, 2019, as well as when and how to take advantage of them.
Bloch participated as a panelist in a session titled, “Protecting IP & Avoiding Pitfalls with International Licensing.” Panelists discussed the pros and cons of different licensing models, the challenges of licensing a patent globally, and more. Bloch focused his remarks on SEP and increased anti-trust regulations and looking beyond traditional licensing models.
Schwaab, a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig’s Silicon Valley office and member of the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology and Patent Prosecution Practices, focuses his practice on strategic intellectual property matters, including counseling, global patent prosecution, patent litigation, licensing, validity and infringement analyses/opinions, due diligence, and freedom-to-operate issues. With more than 20 years of experience, he handles matters related to a wide range of electrical and computer technologies.
Bloch, a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig’s San Francisco office and member of the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology and Intellectual Property Litigation Practices, focuses on helping clients understand the complex technical and legal issues that their businesses face. He litigates patent infringement, trademark, and trade secrets cases for clients in the financial services, technology (networking), health care, and pharmaceutical industries. A prolific writer, Bloch is the co-author of IP and Technology in Government Contracts (now in its fifth edition) and more than 50 articles on IP-related issues.
