Injustice System: Re-Examining the Murder Case of Pierre Rushing

Jordan Grotzinger and Andrea Carmona appeared on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper on May 8, 2026.

“Injustice System: Re-Examining the Murder Case of Pierre Rushing” is about the wrongful conviction of an aspiring rapper from Oakland, Calif., who has spent the last 15 years of his life in prison.

The CNN segment examines serious questions surrounding Pierre Rushing’s original conviction, including key evidence which was withheld from his defense team in violation of the Brady disclosure rule, which requires prosecutors to share all material evidence with the defense. Thirteen years after Rushing’s conviction, critical documents that were never provided to his original attorneys were produced for the first time.

Compounding concerns about the integrity of the case, the only eyewitness against Pierre Rushing has since recanted his testimony. And multiple people have signed affidavits swearing Pierre Rushing was not at the scene of the crime.

Greenberg Traurig is handling Pierre Rushing’s case on a pro bono basis.
