MEXICO CITY – Oct. 14, 2019 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP in Mexico City collaborated with Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on a pro bono basis in the preparation of a study of the legal process needed to comply with Mexican law governing the consultation of indigenous communities regarding infrastructure and energy projects.
As part of the firm’s award-winning Mexico City Pro Bono Program, attorneys from several areas of practice in the office helped the NHRC in compiling the study. The Greenberg Traurig team’s work included the review of publications prepared by the NHRC to ease the understanding by indigenous communities of these procedures. The overall objective was to develop a methodology that allows these projects to continue without disruptions while considering and fully honoring human rights.
Over the years, stakeholders who take part in the development of infrastructure projects in Mexico have sought to create mechanisms to address human rights, environment, and other public interests impact of such important projects.
Greenberg Traurig Mexico City’s Pro Bono Program has been recognized by Latin Lawyer, Appleseed Mexico Foundation, USAID, among others, and was recently shortlisted for the “Pro Bono Program of the Year” Award by Chambers Diversity & Inclusion Awards: Latin America 2019.
